Em Muench, CPDT-KA

OWNER, TRAINER

Em Muench is a dedicated dog lover whose journey into dog training began in 2019 when she volunteered to train service dogs for veterans and first responders with IOWA Service Dogs. Starting as a volunteer, she worked her way up to assistant trainer, discovering a deep passion for understanding and communicating with dogs. Originally from the metro Detroit area, Em lived in Des Moines, Iowa, from 2017 to 2024. During that time, she gained experience as a professional dog trainer, contributed to the community by training service dogs, and founded Barkology Dog Training, which opened in August 2023.

Em’s passion for dog training grew even deeper when she adopted her first dog, Oliver, in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. Oliver came into her life as a playful, loving dog but soon showed signs of separation anxiety, reactivity, and a lack of confidence. He also pulled on the leash, making walks a challenge. Working through these issues together helped Em develop a deeper understanding of the patience and trust needed to help dogs feel secure. Oliver’s transformation into a more confident companion sparked her desire to help other dogs and owners navigate their own struggles, building positive relationships in the process.

Em’s professional journey wasn’t always centered on dogs. A graduate of Drake University with a BFA in musical theatre, she initially pursued a career in the arts. However, her experiences training service dogs shifted her focus, and she realized that the connection, communication, and adaptability she learned in the theatre were just as important in dog training.

Since then, Em has earned her Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) credential and committed herself to helping owners enjoy life with their dogs. Whether it’s getting puppies off to a great start, building confidence in anxious dogs, or addressing challenging behaviors, Em creates solutions that work for both dogs and their families.

With her creative background and dedication to evidence-based training, Em brings a unique perspective to her work. She values building strong relationships with clients and their dogs, ensuring training is a positive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

If you’re ready to unlock your dog’s potential, Em would love to help. Reach out today—your dog’s best behavior starts here!

WHY CERTIFICATIONS MATTER

The dog training industry is largely unregulated, meaning anyone can claim to be a trainer, regardless of experience or qualifications. This can result in ineffective or harmful methods that may compromise your dog’s well-being and safety. Choosing a certified trainer ensures they’ve met rigorous standards, have a deep understanding of canine behavior, and use humane, science-based techniques.

As a CPDT-KA certified trainer, I’ve earned my credential through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). This certification ensures that I follow ethical, force-free training methods grounded in the latest research and prioritize your dog’s health, safety, and happiness.
